Green Patterns on the Wall

One of my earliest memories is lying in my first bedroom, watching shifting green patterns dance across the walls and ceiling while music played. Years later, when I described it to my mom, she told me the room had been painted a soft green, and the patterns were the rising sun filtering through the branches of the shrub outside my window—birds waking up right along with me. Maybe that’s why I’ve always loved birds, and why I still rise with the sun.
